iOs mobile app
Spritely
An end-to-end app for incorporating brain health habits.
Background
Our brain controls everything in our body - thinking, memory, emotions, movement, vision.
Taking care of brain health reduces the risk of dementia, protects against diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
There’s increasing evidence that it’s possible to improve our brain health and the quality of our lives by making lifestyle changes.
Yet there is limited awareness around brain health and people are not motivated to make the necessary lifestyle changes to maintain a healthy brain.
TLDR - Introducing Spritely
Spritely is a mobile app that encourages people to adopt healthy brain care habits while increasing awareness around the importance of brain health. The goal of Spritely is to provide simple science-backed healthy brain health habits to the user in a friendly, optimistic tone.
User Research - Do people know what "Brain Health" means?
I conducted 1-on-1 user interviews to discover what people understand about brain health as well as what would motivate them to adopt healthy brain health habits.
A common theme from the interviews was a lack of fully understanding what brain health means.
Discovery - Surveys
To supplement my research and to cast a wider net of respondents, I created a survey and collected results from 27 participants within my target audience of 45-54 age range.
I wanted to find out what lifestyle changes people would be most interested in adopting into their daily routine?
Competitive Analysis
I took a look at health and well-being apps with features that could be incorporated into brain healthcare.
The number of apps centered around wellness is overwhelming but I didn’t find a direct competitor offering a brain health habit tracker app. Looking at these products allowed me to get inspiration for my own project as well as identify areas of improvement, such as providing educational, science-based content in a motivating, positive tone.
HMW
Based on the user interviews and the surveys conducted, I defined the problem statement to focus on.
Brainstorming a Solution
I used a brainstorming exercise, Analogous Inspiration to generate ideas around health motivators.
Through this brainstorming, I came up with the idea of having the user set their health intention, their Why, as a reminder to stay on track of their goals.
I studied existing design patterns and sketched out ideas to visualize the key features of the app.
Visual Identity and Tone of Voice
I created a mood board to guide the design direction of the app. Since brain health can be a heavy topic, it was important to create an experience that felt optimistic and calming while still providing a resource for trusted scientific information.
For the name, I also wanted to avoid anything overtly “brainy” and keep it aligned with the brand values. I landed on “Spritely” to communicate the healthy, youthful brand aspiration.
Spritely Design System
The Spritely color palette is driven by soft muted tones to evoke a calming feel. I chose Poppins type to deliver clean, easy to read modern text. The brand mark for Spritely is inspired by the shape of a neuron in a simple, minimalist form. Friendly icons with a pop of color are used to communicate the health goals and activities. Photography has an elevated look but still feels authentic.
Lo Fi Wireframes
I created wireframes based on my concept sketches. Since there is a lack of understanding around what brain health is, I created an onboarding flow to educate the user. One of the key features is having the user set their health intention, their Why, by uploading a photo as a reminder. I used language that was friendly and approachable, addressing the user by name.
Bringing it all together into Hi Fi Proto
Now it was time to bring the product to life by moving into a hi-fi clickable prototype.
